Italy offers the Bay of Naples, with its spectacular rocky coastline where there are several world-renowned archaeological wonders such as Pompeii which was covered in ash, and Herculaneum in solidified volcanic mud after Mount Vesuvius erupted. At the toe of Italy, Sicily has had many ancient civilisations leave their mark; Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Barbarians and Byzantines.
